UC technology recommendations and specs for students looking to purchase a new computer...
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
- Processor/CPU: At least Intel Core i5, i7, or i9 (or AMD equivalents) with a speed of at least 2.0GHZ (the higher the better). For optimal performance, a laptop or MacBook with a modern processor is essential. Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processors are suitable for most university tasks, including web browsing, word processing, multimedia consumption, and light multitasking. However, for more demanding tasks such as video editing or programming, opting for an Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 processor would provide better performance and responsiveness.
- Memory: At least 16 GB of RAM or greater (the higher the better). RAM plays a critical role in multitasking and overall system performance. With a minimum of 16GB of RAM, university students can ensure smooth operation when running multiple applications simultaneously. This capacity is particularly beneficial for tasks involving photo or video editing, virtualization, software development, and handling large datasets.
- Storage: At least 512 GB hard drive or solid-state drive. Solid State Drives (SSDs) offer faster boot times, quicker application loading, and improved overall system responsiveness compared to traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). Aim for a laptop or MacBook with a minimum of 512GB SSD storage to accommodate the operating system, essential software applications, personal files, and additional storage space for future needs.
- Screen Resolution: At least 1024 x 788 or higher
- Graphics: For most university tasks, an integrated graphics solution is sufficient. However, if your coursework involves graphic design, 3D modeling, or gaming, consider opting for a dedicated graphics card to enhance performance. NVIDIA GeForce MX series or AMD Radeon Pro graphics cards are suitable for entry-level graphic design tasks, while more demanding applications may require higher-end GPUs such as NVIDIA GeForce GTX or RTX series.
- Webcam: An internal or external webcam that can be detected by a hardware device for recording by the computer. The camera should have at least 720p resolution
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS:
- Operating System: Windows 11 OR macOS 14 (Sonoma) or macOS 15 (Sequoia), or higher. The choice between Windows and macOS ultimately depends on personal preference and compatibility with required software.
- Web Browser: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge (current or most recent previous version). We do NOT recommend Safari.
- Antivirus Program: The following have good free options: Windows Defender, Bitdefender, and Malwarebytes. For more information, contact UC IT Dept.
- Microsoft Office 365: UC provides Microsoft Office 365 to all active students enrolled in courses in the current term. Instructions to install it can be found here: How to Install Microsoft Office 365
***NOTICE: The University of the Cumberlands does NOT support Chromebooks as they pose challenges for students requiring access to specialized software and offline capabilities essential for academic success. Additionally, Chromebooks lack compatibility with Microsoft Office, a widely used suite of productivity tools vital for university tasks such as document editing, spreadsheet management, and presentation creation. Laptops or MacBooks with Windows or macOS offer greater flexibility, performance, and compatibility with university requirements, making them a more suitable choice for students aiming for a productive and seamless academic experience.
