Online Tests
Online tests, like paper-and-pencil tests, can contain a variety of question types such as multiple choice, short answer, or matching.
The technology of online tests enables instructors to allow multiple attempts, set time limits, auto-grade, include multimedia in questions, schedule date/time ranges for testing, or even require a password to start the assessment.
Tips for Online Test Taking
- Identify whether there is a due date.
- Read the instructions!
- Read the questions carefully and double-check answers.
- Schedule time to take online tests on a computer with a secure and reliable Internet connection that is located in a quiet environment. (Wired connections are typically more reliable than wireless).
- If the test you are taking has a time limit, make sure you do not begin taking it until you are ready!
- If you need special accommodations for a test, contact your instructor at the beginning of the term and prior to each test.
- You may be able to take a test multiple times. If you have multiple attempts, your instructor will control how the grade is calculated.
- For multiple choice questions with multiple answers, your instructor controls whether you are penalized for incorrect choices--and if so, how much. Make sure you read these questions carefully and select only the answers you believe to be correct.
- Do not refresh the page, close the window, or use the back button during the test.
- If you experience any problems during your test, contact your instructor immediately.
Starting a Test
Navigate to the test and select the title. On the next page, select Begin. Your instructor might require that you type an access code to begin; if so, type the access code and select Start Attempt or View Assessment to begin.
If no time limit exists, you can view a test, and you don't have to submit it. When you select View assessment, you can just view the test or add some work.
If your instructor added a time limit, it appears alongside other test details on the Course Content page. You'll also see the time limit on the test's Details & Information page and within the test, as you work. You'll see Start attempt instead of View assessment. When you select Start attempt, you'll receive a pop-up window to start the timer before you can access the test. If you're not ready to start, select Cancel. After you start, the test auto-submits when time is up.
Take a Test
View the details in the right panel, including all information you need to complete a test—the due date, maximum points, and time limit. See how many questions you have remaining at the top of the assessment.
Type or choose your answers. You can use the options in the editor to format the text and embed images and attach files. If you view the editor on a smaller screen, select the plus icon to view the menu of options.
Select Submit when you're ready for your instructor to grade your work. If you try to submit a test with unanswered questions, an alert will appear showing the number of unanswered questions. You can decide whether to submit the test or keep working.
