Overview

University of the Cumberlands is using Blackboard Learn to deliver your online learning experience.  Blackboard Learn is a  Learning Management System (LMS) that provides your institution with the power to deliver, administer, track, and report education online. It allows instructors to develop and deliver education online in a user-friendly way. As a student, you'll be able to view content, submit work, communicate with others, and view your grades.

Each course in which you are enrolled within Blackboard Learn has a self-contained area comprising course content, activities, students, and instructors. You may interact with this online platform to:

  • Review materials such as readings
  • Complete course work such as tests and assignments
  • Complete activities such as discussions or tests
  • Communicate with the class using web conferencing tools like Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, a virtual classroom for synchronous meetings or class sessions

The Blackboard Learn platform offers students a range of communication tools used for anything from self-reflection to sharing ideas and resources with your classmates. Some activities are synchronous (i.e., you are online at the same time as those with whom you are communicating) and others are asynchronous (i.e., users are not required to be online at the same time).

How will I use Blackboard Learn in my courses?

The way you'll use Blackboard Learn depends on a few factors: the delivery mode for the course you are enrolled in, and how your instructor decides to use the Learn platform. It's important to review your course description and syllabus to find out what to expect from each course you are enrolled in at your institution. Generally, a course may be fully online, face-to-face, or blended (a combination of the two). Let's take a closer look at these three types of courses and what you could expect to complete using Blackboard Learn.

In a fully online course:

  • You do not meet in a physical classroom, but interact entirely through Blackboard Learn.
  • Course materials are delivered in an online format.
  • Any communication and interaction with your instructor or other students are completely online.
  • You complete and submit all course work online.

In a blended course:

  • You will have components of a face-to-face classroom, but also online components as well.
  • You meet in the classroom for the scheduled hours of the course, but you complete some coursework in Blackboard Learn.
  • Supplementary materials, such as a course syllabus, homework assignments, and a discussion board are delivered in Blackboard Learn. These components are intended to supplement, not replace, face-to-face course work.
  • You will complete face-to-face and online activities to reinforce, complement, and support each other.

In a face-to-face course:

  • You meet in the classroom for the scheduled hours of the course.
  • Your instructor may post files for you to download in Blackboard Learn.
  • Your instructor may post your grades online.
  • You may be asked to submit your assignments through Blackboard Learn.

Accessing Blackboard Learn

You can access Blackboard Learn from a variety of devices, and since it is built with a responsive framework, the size and layout of content will adjust to the display dimensions you are using. Similarly, if you are on a laptop or desktop and change the size of the browser window, the content will adjust for optimal display rather than create horizontal scrolling.

How can I access from my computer?

When you are on a computer, you can access Blackboard Learn from your browser. Make sure you use a  supported browser.

How should I access from my mobile device?

While you could use the browser on your mobile device, the best way to access Learn is with the Blackboard app. The Blackboard app provides you an intuitive way to view and interact with courses, instructors, and content, with emphasis placed on your immediate needs.
